Hurepoix belongs to the Island of France area :
The Island of France term appears in 1387 in the chronicle of Froissart. It replaced the name of
country of France (21 villages around St-Denis) when country took the direction of
nation and France the direction of French kingdom. Island of meant the spit of
land delimited by Oise, Seine and Marne-Ourcq.
From 1419, the governors of the Island of France have authority on the old country of France (Paris, Argenteuil, St-Denis), on the 6 countries still forming part of the Paris area and on the 5 Picardy countries (Laonnais, Noyonnais, Soissonnais, Valois and Beauvaisis).
Hurepoix is a natural area, almost entirely located on the department of the Essonne and present of the varied lanscapes. It is a broken and wooded area which kept a picturesque rural character.
It is an area of wooded hills forming the basin of the Orge (Orobia), from Rambouillet
to the forest of Fontainebleau. The expression pagus Orobiensis (deformed in Huripenisi)
indicated starting from XIIe century, a unit including French Gâtinais until Montargis, and Etampois.
